You can know exactly what you wish you had done after the moment has passed. During the argument, the surge of panic or the urge to withdraw, that knowledge becomes difficult to use.

The Therapist's Den's DBT-informed work is for women who need practical ways to respond to distress, intense emotion and difficult interactions. We focus on the point where a skill needs to become usable in ordinary life.

What DBT brings to the work

Dialectical Behavior Therapy combines behavioral change strategies with attention to acceptance and validation. A person can recognize why a response developed and still need to change what happens next.

The work looks closely at a sequence. What made you vulnerable that day? What happened? What did you notice? What action followed, and what did it change immediately or make harder later?

A useful plan works with that sequence. It gives you a response to practice and a way to examine the result, rather than requiring you to remember a general instruction to calm down.

Four areas of DBT skills

Behavioral Tech Institute's skills training description identifies four central areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness.

Mindfulness involves noticing what is happening with enough attention to respond deliberately. Distress tolerance focuses on getting through difficult moments without making the situation worse. Emotion regulation involves identifying and responding to emotional patterns. Interpersonal effectiveness addresses requests, limits and relationships.

The value depends on application. A skill discussed while you are calm needs a connection to the situation where you usually lose access to it.

When the response becomes another problem

Perhaps an upsetting message is followed by a long series of replies you later wish you had not sent. Perhaps you agree to something because disagreement feels unbearable, then spend the next week resentful and withdrawn.

The immediate response may produce short-term relief. The longer effect can be more conflict, more avoidance or less trust in your ability to handle the next situation.

Therapy can slow down the sequence and identify where a different action is possible. That includes considering practical needs such as sleep, workload and the environment, rather than treating emotion as a personal failure.

Skills for relationships and boundaries

Knowing the boundary is often easier than holding it when another person is disappointed. You may explain too much, reverse the decision or accept responsibility for making the other person comfortable with it.

DBT-informed work can help examine the goal of a conversation, the relationship and your self-respect together. A useful request is specific enough to answer. A useful limit describes what you are willing to participate in and what you will do next.

The circumstances matter. A communication skill should not be used to make a person more accommodating to intimidation or an unsafe situation. The treatment plan needs an accurate account of the relationship.

DBT skills groups

A skills group provides a structured setting for learning and practicing a defined curriculum with other participants. The group format, current schedule and clinical fit should be clear before enrollment.

If you are searching for DBT therapy groups near you, ask about current women-only group options. Confirm the focus of the available group, the skills covered and how participation fits with any individual treatment.

Our group therapy page explains the difference between skills groups, process groups and other support formats.

DBT-informed treatment and comprehensive DBT

These terms describe different service structures. Behavioral Tech Institute's overview of standard DBT describes individual therapy, skills training, between-session coaching and a clinician consultation team as the model's treatment modes.

Using DBT skills within psychotherapy does not, by itself, mean that all of those services are included. The plan for your care should explain the format, clinician role and contact arrangements that apply. A skills group should also be described as a skills group rather than standing in for the entire treatment model.

This page describes DBT-informed therapy and skills options. The team can discuss the current service structure and whether it matches the support you need.

When more frequent care may be appropriate

If distress and the behaviors around it repeatedly disrupt daily life between appointments, the amount of support may need to change. Our licensed women-only IOP offers an assessment route for more structured outpatient care.

IOP is a level of care. DBT is a treatment approach. They can be discussed within the same plan without assuming that every IOP is a comprehensive DBT program.

Questions about DBT therapy

Is DBT only for one diagnosis

The method has a particular research history and can inform work with emotional and behavioral difficulties. Whether it fits your concern depends on an assessment, the treatment goal and the service being offered. A skill list is not a diagnosis.

Do I need to choose between CBT and DBT before contacting you

You can begin with the concern and discuss method fit with a clinician. Our article on CBT and DBT explains the differences without requiring you to diagnose the problem yourself.

How do I ask about a group
